How To Become A DJ?

It’s been 7 years now that I have been teaching DJing & music production to my students, but in almost every batch, I am often asked, what it takes to be a successful DJ. It has always been hard to answer this question as every DJ has a different journey and a unique experience. However, there are a few points that will help you get started as a DJ to reach their dream musical destination.
How to Become a DJ

#1 Use the right audio format

Vinyl records are known for the best sound quality for tracks released even today, however with changing technology, WAV formats provide the best uncompressed digital sounds. The downside to WAV format is their huge file size, that might take a lot of space on your devices. Today, majority professional DJ perform using MP3 file type as it is almost 5 times smaller in size than WAV format and still gives a quality output of a recorded CD. You should always download original music from trusted sources in a 320kbps format only.

 #2  Build your own collection

Becoming a DJ is not an easy task, it requires years of hard work  and passion for music. As a good DJ, you will have to create your own collection of music that  can be played as a set for a few hours. You can look out for music on sites like beatport or  bandcamp.

#3 Learn the art of Mixing

It is very important to learn the art of mixing two tracks together  without letting the audience know the transition. There are countless videos on YouTube that might help you learn, but only hands-on practice with the gear and mentorship of an experienced faculty at a music school will make you stand out. Only a professional DJ can teach you the nuance of mixing, EQing, phrasing, beat-matching, and prep. Read Here if you want to know  5 Simple Reasons why Joining a Music School is a Better Option.

#4 Get the Right Gear

Technology has changed how we DJ today as compared to a decade  ago. Choosing the right gear will always help you perform better. Make sure you have a good  headphone to help you beat match while you perform, music back-up in USB pen-drives that  is compatible with CDJ players. You can also opt for DJ Controllers that will help you connect  with your laptop and perform.

#5 Learn Your Trade

My first advice to anyone who wants to become a DJ is, that you need to  understand the DJ industry, how it works and what you need to do to become successful.  DJing is not only about skills behind the console, but also on the other side of it. You need to  learn how to promote yourself as a DJ, getting your first gig, playing in a club, performing for  private parties, recording your set etc. With good skills you can perform better, however  knowing the insights of the industry will help you perform at good venues.

When Anupriya Kukreja joined For The Record Music School, she never imagined a great kick  start for her DJing career. “Starting our very first class with mixing lessons on the Turntable itself the very foundation of DJing, and finally doing my showcase on the last day of class at one of my  favorite clubs- Auro!”, says Anupriya.
